Plumbing smoke testing is a fast, reliable method for detecting leaks, cracks, and illegal connections in drain, waste, and vent (DWV) systems. Using a smoke blower along with the right smoke-generating product, you can quickly visualize problem areas without damaging the system. This category features two effective tools for smoke testing: plumbing smoke bombs and smoke emitters.

Whether you're working on residential, commercial, or municipal systems, our smoke testing products help identify hidden faults and confirm system integrity. Browse our smoke bombs and emitters below—or contact our team for guidance.

Smoke Bombs for Plumbing

Plumbing smoke bombs are widely used to locate leaks, cracks, and defective connections in DWV systems. When paired with a compatible smoke blower, they release thick, visible smoke that reveals even hard-to-spot faults. These smoke bombs are ideal for longer inspections or larger plumbing systems.

Common Uses of Plumbing Smoke Bombs

  • Finding leaks in DWV plumbing systems
  • Identifying cracked or damaged pipes in hard-to-reach areas
  • Detecting faulty or illegal connections
  • Inspecting sewer lines for maintenance or new construction
  • Resolving vent stack issues
  • Testing for code compliance

Ideal for:

  • Licensed plumbers
  • Sewer and drain contractors
  • Municipal utility departments
  • Building maintenance teams
  • Plumbing code inspectors

How to Choose the Right Smoke Bomb

Choosing the right plumbing smoke bomb is determined by the size of the system and the scope of your inspection. Consider the following factors for ideal coverage and accurate results:

  • Test Duration – Choose burn times from 30 seconds to 3 minutes depending on inspection needs
  • System Size – Select a smoke output (CU FT) suitable for the size of the DWV system
  • Multiple Units – For larger layouts, use multiple bombs simultaneously or in sequence

  • Sold in convenient cases or containers

How To Choose the Right Smoke Emitter

Selecting the appropriate smoke emitter depends on the scale and duration of your inspection. Use the points below to help match the emitter to your specific testing needs:

  • Smoke Output – Measured in cubic feet per emitter; select based on coverage area
  • Burn Time – 45 seconds up to 8 minutes

FAQs

How do plumbing smoke bombs and emitters work?

They release visible smoke when ignited and used with a smoke blower. Leaks or defects in the system allow the smoke to escape, showing exactly where issues exist.

Are these products safe for residential use?

Yes. Both smoke bombs and emitters are designed for use in residential, commercial, and municipal systems without causing damage.

How long does a sewer smoke bomb/emitter burn?

Sewer smoke bombs/emitters have burn durations ranging from 30 seconds to 8 minutes. The ideal burn time is determined by the system's size and inspection requirements. For larger systems, a longer burn time or additional smoke bombs/emitters may be required.

Can I use plumbing smoke bombs/emitters on huge municipal projects?

Absolutely! Plumbing smoke bombs/emitters are suitable for both home and large-scale municipal plumbing systems. For large projects, additional smoke bombs/emitters or those with a larger CU FT production will provide comprehensive inspection coverage.

How to use Smoke Emitters?

To use smoke emitters, insert one into a compatible smoke blower and ignite it according to the manufacturer's instructions. The blower pushes the dense smoke through the plumbing system, allowing it to escape through leaks, cracks, or faulty connections. Always follow safety guidelines and ensure proper ventilation during use.
