Use Petersen Products Inflatable Pipe Plugs

Figuring out the best approach to solve a problem in a pipe system can be challenging, especially if you aren’t familiar with the system. Each one has a history, and the conditions can vary dramatically from one pipe system to the next. For that reason, pressure testing is vital to ensure that the pipes are capable of withstanding certain levels of pressure.

If your work involves industrial and commercial applications, you’re familiar with the common problem of backpressure or fluid regulation. Inflatable pipe plugs are the solution to this situation because they can seal openings and prevent fluid from flowing out of pipelines or ducts.

Similar to other inflatable objects, inflatable plugs expand when filled with air, fluid, or gas to block pipes during construction, maintenance or testing. Over time, a variety of innovations has allowed Petersen Products to create inflatable plugs that work in almost any operating conditions and environments.

Here is how to inflate and use a Petersen Products inflatable pipe plug step-by-step.

How to use Petersen inflatable pipe plugs

  1. Remove any sharp edges from the pipe that may puncture the plug.
  2. Attach the inflation pressure source hose and the pressure monitoring hose with gauges.
  3. Purge the pressure monitor hose of water, if necessary, to assure accurate gauge readings.
  4. Insert the inflatable plug completely, so that it’s fully supported by the pipeline.
  5. Be sure to tether or block the plug adequately to prevent it from slipping.
  6. Inflate the plug to twice the pipeline pressure to stop the flow.
  7. Never exceed the plug rated inflation pressure.
  8. When the job is done, deflate the plug and pull the plug carefully out of the pipeline or manhole.
  9. Clean the plug and inspect it for damage.

Inflatable plugs designed for any situation

Petersen Products is a manufacturer with a mission to provide solutions to your plumbing and industrial pipeline needs. Here’s an overview of our inflatable plug series.

Petersen’s Multi-Flex® Inflatable Plugs 113 through 127 Series

  • Generally used for water, hydrocarbon, and chemical resistance
  • Almost any size, pressure, chemical and temperature requirement
  • Highly flexible, so it conforms to almost any pipe configuration
  • Greatest multi-size range and can fit through very small openings
  • Fabricated from synthetic materials, so it won’t age like molded rubber plug
  • Used for blocking pipeline but may allow some seepage unless customized for pipeline testing
  • Inflated with air, water, nitrogen or other liquid
  • Available with or without a flow-thru by-pass

PeteStop® Inflatable Line Stop Plugs 128 and 129 Series

  • The 128 and 129 Series PeteStop® Line Stop Plugs allow you to temporarily seal off a section of pipe. These plugs may be inserted through a much smaller hot tap hole than heavier, costlier, more time-consuming mechanical stops.
  • The 128 series fits in a smaller tap hole size, while the 129 series can block much higher pressures.

Molded Rubber Inflatable Test Plugs 130 to 139 Series

  • Single size and multi-size rubber plugs are one of the most popular pipe plug for low pressure testing
  • Designed to test drain, vent, and waste systems for residential, commercial, and industrial piping systems. Easily fits test tees, closet bends, sanitary tees, floor drains, and roof vents.
  • Made with natural rubber.
  • Drain pipe plugs available with and without bypass.
  • Two Stage for blocking clean out and vent.
  • Remote placement plugs.
  • Leak Detector plugs
  • Many other standard configurations
